Planned Giving

Planned giving is something we can all do….you don’t have to be wealthy to make a huge impact.
Thank you for considering making a planned gift to SHIM. It is clear that you believe in helping your neighbors who are struggling. And like so many people, you’d like to know that the causes and organizations that are near and dear to your heart today continue to thrive in the future. It’s a way to ensure that tomorrow’s neighbors are also helped. Planned giving helps make that a reality.

Simply put, a planned gift is a future donation that enables you to leave a meaningful legacy. Giving is easy to do and there are several options to choose from that best suit your needs. The most common types of planned gifts are given through a will/bequest, life insurance policy, retirement plan, IRA charitable rollover (qualified charitable distribution), and charitable annuities.

Many gifts cost you nothing now, have no minimum contribution, and do not lock you into a decision you make today. Depending on the type of gift you choose, a planned gift may provide significant tax benefits for both you and your family and may even provide income through your life.

If you would like to explore if planned giving is the right decision for you and your family, we would be glad to assist you confidentially and without any obligation. Please contact our Director of Development, Seth Dubin, at sdubin@shimcares.org or 412-854-9120, ext 109.

Income Producing

Income Producing

Income producing gift plans can allow you to make a gift to SHIM and provide income for yourself or your beneficiaries at the same time. These plans allow you to take advantage of government laws that are designed to encourage philanthropy. They offer current income tax deductions and may provide an opportunity to avoid or reduce capital gains tax on assets that have substantially appreciated. Plans can also be used to minimize estate taxes. Types of income producing gifts include:

  • Charitable Gift Annuities
  • Charitable Remainder Trusts
  • Charitable Lead Trusts

IRA Charitable Rollover and Retirement Plans

IRA Charitable Rollover and Retirement Plans

Did you know that you can make your year-end gift to SHIM with an IRA Charitable Rollover? At age 70 1/2 you must begin making withdrawals, and you can direct some of those funds to nonprofit organizations like SHIM.

IRAs and other retirement plans are one of the most tax-burdened assets you can leave to your heirs so it makes them a great option when considering planned gifts. Current tax law requires that qualified plan assets be distributed to individuals within 10 years, leaving your heirs to pay income tax on the distributions at their current bracket. Qualified plan assets are also subject to federal estate tax.

To learn more, please contact Seth at sdubin@shimcares.org or 412-854-9120, ext. 109.

Non-Cash Gifts

Non-Cash Gifts

Giving non-cash gifts is another impactful way to support SHIM and some provide a greater tax benefit than giving cash. Options include:

  • Stock and Other Business Interests
  • Real Estate or Retained Real Estate

To learn more, please contact Seth at sdubin@shimcares.org or 412-854-9120, ext. 109.

*All gifts are subject to be considered or denied based on SHIM’s gift acceptance policy.
