8th Grade Service Project

Dear Parents and Community Members,

We are writing this letter to inform you about this year’s Eighth Grade Community Service Project and to ask for your support. By an overwhelming majority, the students in our class voted to work with the Conner M. Holland Foundation, a foundation assisting families affected by pediatric cancer.

CONNER’S STORY
In January of 2010, Conner Holland, the child of our organization’s founders, was diagnosed with T-Cell ALL Leukemia. Conner persevered through the first 9-months of treatment, but at month 14 his cancer relapsed. Chemotherapy drugs that were meant to cure his cancer instead gave him a devastating brain injury that prevented doctors from pursuing any curative therapies. Conner passed away on September 4th, 2011 at the age of 3.

The Conner M. Holland Foundation was formed out of this tragedy. They feel that it is unacceptable for families to suffer financial distress while dealing with the crushing weight of pediatric cancer. They provide care, support, and financial assistance to those who need it the most.  To learn more about the Holland family’s story, visit www.connerholland.com. This site chronicles Conner’s entire journey through leukemia.

Based in south-central Pennsylvania, The Conner M. Holland Foundation is a recognized non-profit 501(c)3 organization that serves families in Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties. The official registration and financial information of the Conner M. Holland Foundation may be obtained from the Pennsylvania Department of State by calling toll free, within Pennsylvania, 1 (800) 732-0999.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
Each year our students design a T-shirt to increase awareness of the community service project.  We would like to offer local business owners the opportunity to become T-Shirt Sponsors.  This year your support will help us to buy our eighth grade students these very important shirts.  For generous donations of $100 or more, the sponsor’s logo and title will be printed on the back of the shirts.  The shirts will also be sold to students in other grades and be available to community members.   If you are interested in becoming a T-Shirt Sponsor, please write a check made out to “SHMS” and attach a business card that shows what you want printed on the back of the T-Shirt.  If you would like to send an electronic jpeg of your logo you can send it to bfili@wssd.org.

Please mail your check and business card to the following address:

Virtual Book Fair at SHMS

In order to make your lives easier, the Home and School Association has put together a virtual book fair for summer reading. Below are lists of the summer reading requirements for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders. (When ordering, please be sure to include the order form on the bottom of the 9th grade form even if you are only ordering from the 7th or 8th grade lists.) You can peruse the list in the comfort of your own home, select the desired books, and send in a check. Books will be delivered to your student in their connections class in May. Your purchase earns money for the school and saves you from the usual scramble to find the required books: a win for everyone. Prices comparable to Amazon. Deadline for orders is Friday, May 20th.
